A root canal is needed when the nerve of a tooth has become damaged or infected. This allows the tooth to be maintained in the mouth by removing the source of the infection and filling the root with a biocompatible material to seal it. Sometimes only a filling is needed to restore the tooth after a root canal, however other times a crown is required to allow the tooth to continue to withstand chewing forces.
